Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009)

When the lights go off the battle is on.

Set to release in Malaysia on the 21st May 2009 (Thursday)

I've had the pleasure of watching it in the company of crazee loved ones yesterday at GSC Mid Valley. Thanks to Chombi for the complimentary tickets. :)

Rela members were stationed everywhere for body scans and security checks. They were actually present right in the screening rooms itself and constantly patrolling to make sure that nobody is fleecing the movie during the special screening. Stringent measures indeed but necessary.

Synopsis:

When the Museum of Natural History is closed for upgrades and renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Washington Museums. The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world's largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) flew on her non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone's (Jon Bernthal) rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy's ruby slippers, Fonzie's jacket from Happy Days, the still from M*A*S*H and Archie Bunker's lounge chair from All in the Family. With a forwarded resume, Larry (Ben Stiller) becomes another caretaker at the Smithsonian, where Kahmunrah, an evil Pharaoh will come to life with the reestablishing of a tablet as a magical force in the museum bringing the old exhibits (Such as Theodore Roosevelt and Dexter) and new exhibits (like General Custer and Al Capone) back to life, and in conflict with each other. Larry enlists the help of Amelia Earheart, who he develops a romantic interest in, and together they try to put everything back in order. (Source: The Internet Movie Database)

Plenty of laughs innit. But as both me and Buu agreed on, they were predictable. I was hoping to see more participation by the old characters in this movie but that didn't happen. A tad disappointed coz who doesn't love Atilla the Hun and Dum Dum!!

Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) IS vey sprightly.. erm abit too sprightly for me till I wanna smack her. But maybe that's the whole point. I was pretty sure Larry (Ben Stiller) would love to do that too. hehehe. Can't help noticing how she flits around like a little dancer, so very nimble and lithe. Oh, a digression - they have a Degas bronze statue inside!

Ok, back to the story. The very indignant evil pharaoh Kahmunrah talks with a lisp and has some funny scenes indeed. And why oh why does his brother Akmenrah have to look like a Greek Adonis? Makes me melt with his affable smile.

Lovable Jeddediah and Octavious will not disappoint. I've come to appreciate Octavious more in Battle of the Smithsonian as compared to the previous movie where Jeddediah bowled me over instead.

Ah, and don't hasten to leave your seats too soon. Wait for the credits rollout and a special scene. You might find out how a certain phone brand came about. *winkz*

P/S: I just noticed I've been blogging more on movies. Bento has taken a back seat for the time being. Still, me hopes to get me bento kitchen up and running again soon! I wonder does anyone actually miss my bento posts?

SELL OUT!

Year: 2008

Country: Malaysia

Length: 110 mins

Language: Manglish, English, Mandarin, Cantonese

World Premiere: Venice Film Festival

Director/Producer/Editor: Yeo Joon Han

Starring: Jerrica Lai, Peter Davis, Kee Thuan-chye, Lim Teik-long, Wong Wai-hoong, Lee Szu-hung, Hannah Lo.

Unfortunately, since I watched it in the local cinema, this intricate piece of work has been unfashionably mutilated by the Censorship Board. *big sigh*

Given a chance, I would rewatch it again and again... and again. Would love to grab a copy of the uncensored version. If anyone has a way, do share with me. I'd really appreciate it. Hehe, if Mr Yeo plans to release the OST, all the better.

Support our local art scene. A fine piece of work like this does not come by everyday. Not your usual fare of Hollywood gunk, this is the real deal. You'll walk away with new perspectives...... or unearth those that you once held, but buried away to make way for the lesser important things in life.

Be cautioned, emotions will run high through the movie. Any true blue Malaysian will not want to miss this. Catch it while it's still on. Hurry!

Angels & Demons

Just a short shoutout to everyone:

"Angels & Demons is the bomb!"

As you can easily guess, le spunky witch, Mr Buu and Handsome Jay Jefferson C just watched the exclusive screening of the aforementioned movie. God bless Chombi for his thoughtfulness. :)

Suspense sial... exciting sial... Buat kitorang gripping our seats in suspense throughout the movie. We were wriggling in our seats most of the time, seething in their anger, almost understanding their frustrations, gasping at the gore and marvelling at Dan Brown's wizardly twisty plot. Me thinks he has a pile of brilliant mush nestled beneath his skull cap, same as me thinks of John Grisham.

I had to admit that the plot was not as cryptic as its prequel "The Da Vinci Code". But it's still a thrilling watch. I haven't had such stirred emotions since "The Dark Knight" where the Joker was eeriely brought to life by the late Heath Ledger who shares the same birthday as me. I love the Joker for his chilling lines since then.

Aitelliu... this awesome possum movie has officially been listed as one of spunkz fave movie of 2009. Plus you knwo what, I can't wait to lay my hands on the book!!! Hope BookExcess carries it. Yes yes, I sound like a nerd but to hell I care.. I just enjoy reading and finishing books in record time. It has become an unsatiated habit, if you may pardon me.

Anyhoos, security was extremely tight at GSC 1 Utama tonight as all of us had to go through a detailed security check before entry is granted. Greatly understood as the movie has yet to be released in Malaysia and measures were taken to prevent the movie from being leaked out. As cliched as it sounds, I gotta say this:

Be sure to catch it when "Angels & Demons" opens in cinemas nationwide on 14 May 2009! It will definitely be worth every single cent!

And guys.....
meet my new friend...
It's Mr Domokun!!!!!

Tri-Shroom Soup

Today's lunch is no homemade fare but still earns a satisfying accolade. Some days I just sleep in more than usual instead of jumping up to prepare breakfast, relishing in the warmth of curling under my patchwork blankie. Do you do the same? :)

After the little indulgence, I shook off the fuzziness and made myself an omelette for work. On the way to office, I made a little detour to pack an economy noodle takeaway for lunch. I also brought a little juicy pear for an after meal nibble. Twas a pleasant surprise when mrs manager brought back a chocolate sundae for each person during lunch. It really hit the spot as the day was sweltering. A heavy meal usually makes me sleepy. So here I am, washing down all my food with a cuppa black java and immersed in a sea of jazzy tunes. bliss~

Lucky is me when I'm with Buu. Or lucky is me for staying near Tesco.

Why? Me boughtz:

  • Baby portobello - RM 0.89
  • Mix of button, swiss brown and portabello - RM 1.10
  • Button mushrooms - RM 0.60
*都快笑掉大牙了*

With these, a mushroom soup was definitely in the making as I'd been hankering for a taste of cream soup for quite some time. What more with mushrooms, an all time pleaser for me. This is a backdated post as I bought the shrooms 3 days ago and made the soup 2 days back. My apologies though as no measurements are provided as I did it in the agak-agak way again.

Tri-shroom Soup

Ingredients

  • Button mushrooms (sliced)
  • Baby portobello mushrooms (sliced)
  • Swiss brown mushrooms (sliced)
  • Butter or oil
  • Plain flour
  • Chicken broth
  • Low fat milk
  • Dash of pepper
  • Pinch of organo
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (Parmigiano-Reggiano)
Instructions

  1. Heat up butter or oil in a pan. If using non-stick pan, the fats used can be minimised.
  2. Add in the three mushrooms and saute till mushrooms give out their earthy juices.
  3. Add in chicken broth and milk and let simmer.
  4. Be generous as you sprinkle in the parmesan cheese and mix well. The cheese will lend some natural salt to the soup as well as flavour.
  5. After simmering for approximately half 20 minutes, scoop out 3/4 of the mushrooms.
  6. Pulse the mushrooms till coarse in ablender. Caution not to blend them too fine lest they lose their bite.
  7. Re-add the mushrooms into the soup and stir well.
  8. Add a dash of pepper and a pinch of oregano for seasoning.
  9. Dissolve flour in some water and add the mixture into soup while stirring the soup gently.
  10. Simmer the soup till it thickens to preferred consistency and it'll be ready to serve.

*** For a more creamy soup, you can substitute the low fat milk with whipping cream.

*** Instead of parmesan, you can substitute with cheddar for creaminess.

*** If you're a big time fan of mushrooms, you can add in other mushrooms such as shiitake as it really lends a richer taste to the soup. If you have an experimental streak, you can also try adding some eringi.

My experimental Tri-shroom Soup was a surprising success as all my gambles paid off. Being the worry wart, I'd fretted that the soup would not thicken or would actually taste weird with the substitution of low fat milk for whipping cream. I'd also switched Cheddar for Parmesan as I did not have the former. The baby portobello contributed a hearty taste to the soup with its meaty flavour while the buttons and swiss browns provided the bite and mellowed the soup's flavour with their delicate taste. Next time round, I'd like to add some shiitake for more oomph but not too much because it'll overpower the soup.

Do share with me if you've made any mushroom soups or have any suggestions for improvements. Would love to hear from anyone. Cheers!

Krispy Kreme @ Berjaya Times Square

I ain't kidding when I said we got Kreme-d.

On our shores, baybeh... sweet~

Hot doughnuts are in the making when the red light's-a-blazing. We stumbled upon this cute revelation by reading their takeaway box.

The doughnut elevator... muahaha.

Something's in hot oil... and we wonder what. :P

This is where they get their royal sheen. That priceless shimmery coating that will get any doughnut virgin converted. Even the most jaded doughnut dopey would agree.

Service was prompt and efficient. I'm not saying this just because we got a free doughnut each. :X

We chose to have four of the original. The rest was handpicked by Mr Manager who assured us that he'll pick the best for us. I wouldn't know if they were the best for sure, but it certainly made the line move faster. That's why I mentioned the service was good earlier. I call it ingenious psychology which yields result.

The real McCoy.

At the bustling outlet itself, yours truly could hardly contain her excitement that she called up Sister Long Legs to share the joy. Hope she would have had sugar coated her dainty fingers by the time this post got published. Foodies, we love sharing. tee hee hee.

By the way, some info to share.. If you box the Krispy Kreme doughnuts home, you can still have them hot and fluffy. Just pop these babies into the microwave for 8 seconds and they're as good as just out of the processing line. We kept some in the refridgerator for 2 days (yes, we're guilty of forgetfulness).... it's a waste to just chuck these luscious beauties without some experiment. Hence we tried nuking them for 10-15 seconds and wow, they still taste awesome - soft and fluffy. Paired with cold milk.... mmmm..... *licks sugar off face*

Verdict: Very soft. Very fluffy. Go for the original sugar glazed doughnut. The thin sugar glaze sets it apart from doughnuts of other brands. It's not your usual sugar dusting. Rather, it's a coating which is not too thick to revolt, yet is thin enough to surprise a non-sweet tooth person like me.

Sugar.. I never knew that I can learn to appreciate it the Krispy way. I guess we learn something new every day.

Happy drooling!

Invalid

I have plenty of things to update since the wedding dinner last weekend but did not find time to do so yet. Anyway, latest news for all...

... the Queen of Humiliation from the Land of Mishap & Unfortunate Events just sprained her right foot yesterday.

So yea... I'm the oaf referred in the previous sentence. But don't worry too much. I'm able to hobble around now compared to yesterday when I was confined to the bed for almost the entire evening by my handsome male nurse. Not that I mind when that yummy looking piece of eye candy made sure that I was comfortable at all times. But the foot was certainly not in a compromising mood yesterday, judging by the times it decided to throb erratically and remind me not to be a klutz anymore.

Thank goodness it decided to be more sensible when I woke up to a lighter feeling foot this morning. Pain's still lurking around, but bearable as long as I do not over-exert it. And a not-so-new realisation uncovered, I abhor the feeling of being an invalid.

Much love & appreciation to the attentive male nurse for catering to my whims, rubbing the sprain and cheering me up. Equal love and appreciation to the family for all their love, concern and worries. I love you all. And thanks Spooky for the warm mms. =)

Other updates coming up in posts soon:

  1. I have a new fridge
  2. We shopped
  3. We got Kreme-d
  4. Zorbball

Over all, this weekend's been totally out-of-this-world with all the stuff that took place. Even the dang foot contributed to a fair share of laughs and amusement. For once in a blue moon, I didn't even care that much that I had to work yesterday.

3 days of euphoria, I must be in heaven...

Life's sweet and I'm truly thankful for the blessings~
